Re Hobson, and the Jays in general: They still haven’t signed picks in the sandwich, second, third (two choices there) and sixth rounds. They’re obviously not done yet, but it remains to be seen how many of Paxton, Eliopoulos, Barrett, Marisnick and Hobson they will sign.

Re Marisnick: I just think the gap between his asking price and slot is the biggest of the Jays’ picks in the first three rounds. Doesn’t mean they won’t sign him, just that he might be the toughest. Paxton and Barrett could give him a run for that distinction, though.

Jim – why the (relative) pessimism on Marisnick? during the draft itself, he was frequently tweeting in the MLB draft sidebar, seemingly very interested in the preceeding and IIRC, indicated heavy excitement to have been selected by the Jays, writing something along the lines of “a dream come true…”

Not sure what Barrett is looking for or how close the Jays are to landing him. He’s a strong, physical righthander with a heavy fastball.

Re the Blue Jays: Depends on how many guys they sign. Marisnick looks like the toughest sign among their early picks.

How do people think the Jays did in the draft this year ? I hope they get Barrett to sign, though i havn’t heard any news about him. Is there any news on if Marisnick is likely to sign, or go off to college ?

The Texas Rangers have signed their 13th pick of the 24th round of the June draft, Shawn Blackwell, RHP-Clear Creek-2009. Blackwell is a big 6′ 5″ 195lb RHP who is able to deliver 90′s fastballs effortlessly. he has a very project able frame and should develop into an even more powerful pitcher for the Rangers. Shawn was a 1st Team All Houston selection by Houston 5A Baseball and a member of the HABCA All Stars as well as Team Texas Sunbelt and American Legion State Runner-up, League City Post-554.

Not sure. With Scott Boras negotiations, all is usually very quiet until suddenly a deal is reached. We’ve estimated the slot at No. 37 to be $837,000, but I’m sure Boras has set his sights higher than that.
