D’backs Ink Owings For $950,000

Gilbert (S.C.) HS shortstop Chris Owings has agreed to terms with the Diamondbacks on a $950,000. The 41st overall pick, Owing got a bonus worth $134,600 more than MLB’s recommendation for his draft slot.

A South Carolina recruit, Owings was one of the best shortstops in the draft. He has offensive tools and the ability to stay at shortstop, and he drew comparisons to a less powerful version of 2008 White Sox first-rounder Gordon Beckham. Owings was the fourth of Arizona’s five selections before the second round.
