There’s a new standard for above-slot bonuses this year. Lipscomb lefthander Rex Brothers agreed to terms with the Rockies on a $969,000 bonus today. That’s $51,000 more than MLB’s recommendation for the No. 34 slot, splitting the difference between this year’s ($918,000) and last year’s ($1,020,000) guidelines.
Clemson first baseman Ben Paulsen, who like Brothers is represented by Jet Sports Management, also agreed to a $391,000 bonus ($4,000 above slot at No. 90) today. Both deals are expected to be finalized by the end of the week.
Prior to Brothers’ deal, the biggest difference between a bonus and MLB’s recommendations was $26,000. Astros first-rounder Jiovanni Mier signed for $1,358,000 at pick No. 21, where the recommendation was $1,332,000.

Seems like teams are being fairly conservative with their offers, but this is early in the negotiating period. I’m sure we will see some players go well about slot near the August 17th deadline. Nobody has gone even 10% over slot to date.
