The 16U Championships in Arizona and Florida, as well as the Tournament of Stars in North Carolina, have been played. From those events USA Baseball selected trials rosters for their 16U and 18U National Teams. At the respective trials, the National Team will be selected to participate in international tournaments.
The 18U National Trials will be held Sept. 12-18 in Cary and Durham, N.C. The final roster of 20 will then travel to Venezuela to participate in the COPABE Pan Am "AAA" (18U) Championships from Sept. 24-Oct. 4.
The 16U National Trials will be held the first week of August on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Those that make the team will participate in the IBAF "AA" Youth (16U) World Championships in Taiwan.
We’ll have more on the Tournament of Stars and 18U players as we decipher our notes and hit the phones. In the meantime, here are the trials rosters for both teams:

Pretty funny that American Legion teammates that couldn’t pitch nearly as well as Michael Wacha make the trials and he will be in College Station practicing with the Aggies. Logan Ehlers and Phillip Pfeifer are good young prospects but if you actually want to have the best players from American Legion, then Wacha shouldn’t have been overlooked. Another teammate without the performances that Wacha had advancing was Daniel Child as an alternate.
Same thing happened to Brooks Raley in 2007, when he was a senior trying out for a team where they really only want to promote sophomores and juniors.
Posted by Jonathon | June 29, 2009 at 7:13 pm | ShortcutJonathon, while you’re right that Wacha pitched very well, don’t be so quick to conclude that he was overlooked. Because Wacha will be an Aggie this fall it is very possible that Texas A&M told USA Baseball that he wasn’t available. Not everyone at the Tournament of Stars is available to play for the National Team for various reasons. Some players aren’t available because they simply can’t miss that much school since the tournament is in September. Others will be in college and the teams don’t want them to play.
Posted by Nathan Rode | June 29, 2009 at 9:27 pm | ShortcutNathan is right, There were some 09′s that USA was very interested in but could not get release from Colleges due to dates of tournament. The Buckland kid from NABF was one of them.
Posted by Rob | June 30, 2009 at 10:09 am | ShortcutThanks for clearing that up, I would hate for any player that is deserving to be overlooked. Look forward to what you have to say about Wacha in your TOS wrap-up.
Posted by Jonathon | June 30, 2009 at 1:26 pm | ShortcutAnyone particularly stand out in the U-16 group as head-and-shoulders, or at least shoulders, above the rest? Anyone of note, besides the obvious Harper and Taillon, in the U-18 club?
And what ever happened to Baseball America’s ‘best by the ages’ feature that came out annually, listing the best players from like age 12 up to age 26? It used to be one of my faves, but haven’t seen it for a couple years…
Posted by Matt Veasey | June 30, 2009 at 1:52 pm | ShortcutMatt, we didn’t have anybody at the 16U events in Arizona or Florida (they are HUGE, tons of teams). But we’ll certainly pass along anything that we can get our hands on from the trials. As for the 18U, there should be a post going up soon with some Tournament of Stars bullet points and we’ll be working on a Top 10 Hitters and Top 10 Pitchers that will go in the magazine and on the web next week probably.
With BA for the Ages, we’ve tried to step away from ranking 12-14 year olds. We simply don’t think it’s fair and there are some other reasons that I won’t get into. My editors tell me that we may do a feature once in a while that might hit on the absolute top player for different ages as something fun, but nothing like the rankings that were done in years past.
Hope that helps.
Posted by Nathan Rode | June 30, 2009 at 3:23 pm | ShortcutWas jake barrett a consideration because as far as we know he wasn’t invited even though he played on last years team and is eligible again?
Posted by brent blakeman | July 7, 2009 at 7:04 pm | ShortcutPlayers that attend the Tournament of Stars after their high school graduation are typically players not considered to have a high pro prospect status coming out of prep baseball. Considering Barrett’s status as a draft prospect I’m sure he wasn’t invited to the tournament. This tournament and team is mainly for 2010s and a few of the 2011s that qualify because of their birthday.
Posted by Nathan Rode | July 7, 2009 at 8:12 pm | ShortcutMentioning other standout I liked was Chad Lewis. He made alternate, not sure why, great swing, power plus. Maybe defense was lacking?
Posted by randy concil | July 12, 2009 at 11:52 pm | ShortcutI liked Drake Roberts, he was a player, small, but plays the game. I saw him at SS in Texas, NABF had him in center. Saw him steal off Harper twice and was a waterbug, all over the place. I think he was #1 or 2 in average at the event. I like him in the middle, quick twitch and a tablesetter.
Randy-
Both of those guys were a lot of fun to watch. Roberts is a 2011 graduate so we get so him a little longer. He played a little 2B at the event which may be where he ends up. Either way he showed an exceptional ability with the bat and utilized his speed as well.
