Like we said, college closer run. Ryan Perry is the third straight college closer to go, and frankly Perry could help the Tigers this year. This team ran out some dreck in the bullpen this season so far, and if they can sign this guy quickly, they could move Ryan Perry quickly to Detroit. He seems to like pitching in Michigan—Perry was excellent in the regional over the weekend in the regional at Ann Arbor, reaching 100 mph. The Mets would have loved Perry at 22, but it was not to be.
Now the Mets at 22 still have Friedrich, who would fill a gaping hole in the organization as a polished college starting pitcher. The Padres and Phillies also want college pitching with the next two picks, and the Padres could pop Perry’s Arizona teammate, Daniel Schlereth. But then at 25, the Rockies are thought to be looking longer-term, considering the youth of their big league roster and current strength of their farm system.
Another player linked to the Padres now is South Carolina shortstop Reese Havens, a polished bat who has a chance to stay up the middle, perhaps at shortstop, more likely at second base or third base.
