A few prospects have come up on the injury radar recently, while others are returning to hopefully help their team boost their rankings.
Outfielder/lefthander Aaron Hicks (Wilson HS, Long Beach) was scratched from his start against Valencia (Calif.) HS and is a game-time decision for tonight against Long Beach foe Millikan HS. He was reported to have a muscle strain, but there were no details about whether it was upper or lower body. More details will be given as they become available.
Third baseman Chris Amezquita (Servite HS, Anaheim) will miss four weeks due to a sprained elbow. Baseball America Prospects Plus scout Dave Perkin confirmed the report with Amezquita’s father. A second opinion was sought, which was concurrent with the original diagnosis.
Lefthander Scott Silverstein (St. John’s HS, Washington, D.C.) could miss two weeks with tendonitis in his bicep. Head Coach Mark Gibbs said it is unlikely he will pitch in the Phil Nevin National Classic, which starts on Monday, March 24. Silverstein is a key piece to the No. 8 squad, which has a tough stretch of schedule coming up. Including St. John’s, five Classic participants are currently in the top 25. Seven were in the preseason top 50.
No. 18 Texarkana (Ark.) HS was without righthander Garrett Underwood temporarily due to a shoulder injury, but he will return in at least the closer role as division play begins for the Razorbacks.
During the preseason, Cypress (Calif.) HS head coach John Weber reported that outfielder Chase Koissian would be out for a month after colliding with a fence. Koissian is still out, but Weber is hopeful he’ll be back within two weeks when they get back into league competition. He suffered an injury to his left patella in the collision. Unfortunately for Cypress, who dropped out of the rankings from No. 22 this week, they’re also without righthander/first baseman Matt Sisto. Sisto is expected to get an MRI on March 20 to determine the cause of the discomfort in his throwing arm. Weber says they’ll know an answer by the end of the week. I will post any updates from Anaheim at the National Classic and Anaheim Lions tournament. Sisto and Koissian are both signed to attend Hawaii in the fall.
