The Orioles announced a seven-figure signing of a Scott Boras client . . . but no, it’s not Matt Wieters. Baltimore landed Texas Christian righthander Jake Arrieta for a $1.1 million bonus.
That’s a new record for a fifth-rounder, surpassing the $900,000 that the Braves gave Matt McClendon in 1999.

Great news! Arrieta was considered a late first round pick and the O’s got him in the fifth. Now, for Wieters.
Posted by alexei | August 15, 2007 at 9:58 pm | ShortcutAgreed, alexei. Stock dropped a bit with a disappointing season, but lots of upside. Still optimistic on Wieters. It would be tough not to sign him for around 8.5 and then see him go for that (or less) next year…
Posted by Stotle | August 15, 2007 at 10:16 pm | ShortcutI’d like to be optimistic on this one but after seeing Arrieta this spring it’s tough for me to believe the hype that he was a 1st round pick and somehow slipped to the 5th round. If anything his showing, the previous year influenced his being drafted in the 5th round. Still, he can be a quality starter if he reverts back to form. Anyway, holding out hope that something can be worked out with one of the top 3 players in the draft(Wieters)IMHO
