Pelzer Breaks Kneecap

The Padres popped one of the best arms available in the ninth round when they drafted Wynn Pelzer out of South Carolina. Though his Cape Cod League numbers weren’t great (1-2, 5.68 with 11 walks and 11 strikeouts in 13 innings over three starts), he was pitching with a 90-94 mph fastball and occasionally plus slider for Orleans. His summer came to a screeching halt when he was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to Cape Cod Hospital after he was struck by a line drive on the right knee, fracturing his knee cap. Allan Dykstra (Wake Forest) ripped a shot off Pelzer’s leg but Pelzer got up and made the play at first before collapsing. He had successful surgery and remains unsigned.
