Draft stock rumors will come fast and furious this week; we only hope we have time to blog them all. Two popped up Monday morning concerning Texas catcher Preston Clark and Calhoun (Ga.) High infielder Charlie Culberson.
Clark, a draft-eligible sophomore, didn’t play for the Longhorns this weekend in their regional loss due to a left knee sprain. Clark’s knees have been an issue throughout his career (he had both knees ‘scoped in high school), and not playing was another sign of this recurring injury issue.
Prep infielder Culberson, however, appears to have moved up the charts of at least one club, with sources indicating he could go to one of the teams, such as the Giants, with extra picks in the supplemental round. Culberson, a teammate of projected first-rounder Josh Smoker, is a gamer who has big league bloodlines (his grandfather Leon played six seasons in the 1940s). He had a huge offensive season with more than 20 home runs and has decent bat speed, though some scouts doubt his future defensive profile.

You guys are getting Culberson confused with his teammate, Brodie Pullen. Pullen hit 20+ HRs this year. Also defense is Culberson best attribute BY FAR. Make a few calls cause you are off here. He has been flying up draft boards in recent weeks, but not as a power hitter.
Posted by Ashley | June 6, 2007 at 9:22 pm | ShortcutAshley, our understanding is that while Pullen has about 25-27 homers, Culberson also was right around 20. we’re reporting what scout’s tell us, and Alan Matthews has covered high schools for us for years, and he’s seen Culberson several times. We’re confident in his scouting report on him.
