His 10 homers and 12 doubles were the biggest reason he towered above the Pacific Coast League in slugging percentage. The fifth overall pick from Miami in 2005, Braun needed just 199 minor league games before receiving his first callup. Braddock was shelved with shoulder tendinitis, interrupting his breakout season with low Class A West Virginia. An 18th-round pick in 2005, Braddock went 3-1, 1.30 with 59-13 strikeouts-walks in 41 2/3 innings for the Power. Anderson was sent to the Southern League for a respite from the PCL, where he’d hit .197/.256/.238. Former Martin County pitcher Mark Diapoules' performance with Palm Beach Community College this spring helped earn him a shot at the big leagues.
The St. Louis Cardinals, who selected Diapoules as a draft-and-follow last spring, signed him Monday. He will begin with the Cardinals' rookie-league team in Johnson City, Tenn., in the Appalachian League this summer. Diapoules was 8-3 with 78 strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA at Palm Beach Community College this season. He gave up only 56 hits in 84 innings. The Cardinals had a year to sign him after they picked him in the 21st round (No. 646 overall) in 2006. He was one of six Palm Beach Community College players drafted last year.
