The season is over for Vanderbilt, the No. 1 team in the nation for the last nine weeks and the No. 1 national seed in the NCAA tournament. It seems like the Commodores have had to battle back from behind over and over again during last two weeks, and they had to do it again tonight against Michigan, but this time the magic ran out. The Wolverines carried a 3-1 lead into the eighth, when Vanderbilt tied the score with a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. Vandy called upon ace lefthander David Price in the ninth inning after Casey Weathers issued a leadoff walk, and Price struck out the final two batters to end the inning. But in the 10th, pinch-hitter Alan Oaks homered to left field off Price to give Michigan a 4-3 lead, and the ‘Dores couldn’t come back again in the bottom of the frame. Price takes his first loss of the year in Vanderbilt’s last loss, as Michigan advances to super-regionals against the winner of tomorrow’s decisive Virginia-Oregon State game in Charlottesville at noon ET.
All the other super-regionals are set, and shockingly, just three of the eight national seeds have advanced–No. 2 Rice, No. 3 North Carolina and No. 5 Arizona State. All the favorites won in the rest of this evening’s games, as Wichita State blanked Arizona 3-0, Texas A&M beat Louisiana-Lafayette 5-2, and South Carolina topped Charlotte 11-6. Here are the super-regional matchups:
Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary):
Texas A&M at Rice
Oklahoma State at Louisville
Clemson at Mississippi State
South Carolina at North Carolina
Saturday, Sunday and Monday (if necessary):
Michigan at Virginia/Oregon State winner
UCLA at Cal State Fullerton
Mississippi at Arizona State
UC Irvine at Wichita State
We’ll have much more analysis tomorrow, in addition to a new top 25. For the first time in quite a long time, Vanderbilt will not be No. 1.

Way to go Fitt…calling the Vandy regional the easiest! It is very difficult to win the regionals when you drop a game.
