IRVINE, Calif.—Brian O’Connor has had some awfully good clubs over the last six years at Virginia, but the Cavaliers could never quite get over the hump to super regionals. But not even a nightmarish draw could keep them from winning a regional in 2009. Virginia sparkled in all phases for three straight days at the loaded Irvine Regional, capped by a flawless 4-1 win against UC Irvine on Sunday night.
"It’s a huge step for our program," O’Connor said. "In the last six years, we won our first ACC championship last week—we had been in that title game three times and figured out how to win that thing. We came out here to what people were saying was the toughest regional in the field, and we played what I thought was spectacular baseball all weekend. I am so proud of our team."
"Spectacular" might just be putting it mildly; just ask Anteaters coach Mike Gillespie.
"Hats off to Virginia, who is a really, really, really good team who played really, really well," Gillespie said. "And we’re very impressed with them."
The Cavaliers got their third straight stellar outing from their starting pitcher, as senior righthander Andrew Carraway (7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER) pounded the strike zone and let his sensational defense do its job. Closer Kevin Arico closed it out with two perfect innings of relief.
Catcher Franco Valdes, the Most Outstanding Player in the regional, put the Cavaliers on the board with an RBI double in the fourth, then put them ahead for good with an RBI triple down the right-field line in the sixth. Irvine first baseman Jeff Cusick appeared to have a chance to make a play on the ball, but it took a funny hop off the bag and rolled into the right-field corner.
Virginia added two insurance runs in the ninth on back-to-back RBI triples from Jarrett Parker and Tyler Cannon. Parker, an electric player who had three hits and also made a terrific diving catch to record the first out in the ninth, smashed a liner down the right-field line that Cusck deflected toward that same bullpen area. Parker scored easily on Cannon’s triple to the left-center-field gap, giving UVa. its final 4-1 margin of victory.
Virginia’s coaches, players and fans have been waiting for this for so long, and it’s easy to feel happy for such a likable bunch. Especially after the ACC champion Cavs got such a raw deal from the Division I baseball committee, having to travel to the West Coast to face San Diego State sensation Stephen Strasburg in their first game, then having to beat the nation’s No. 1-ranked team twice on its home field.
"It doesn’t get any tougher than this," O’Connor said, "going to the No. 1 regional in the country and facing the greatest pitcher—" he paused—"of all time, from what I read. I think we’re capable of accomplishing anything.
"This club has something special. No disrespect to last year’s team, but this team’s got that ‘it’ factor. They have something about them that they’re not going to be denied. It took us a while to figure that out as the year went on. I think we lost eight one-run games in the league. I just felt like as this team moved along and matured, and we got that bullpen figured out, I just felt like when all that came together, and this youth we have, and these veterans we have, I thought we had a chance to do something special."

Is there any chance UVA gets to host a Super Regional? I think they’ve more than earned it.
Posted by Jeff | June 1, 2009 at 6:22 am | ShortcutThanks Aaron! I know you have supported this team for some time. You knew how good they are, long before ESPNU’s audience did.
Posted by Cav Fan Gene | June 1, 2009 at 7:08 am | ShortcutI have the same question about hosting a Super Regional… the Daily Progress article this morning noted that Ole Miss has to lose tonight for UVA to host.
Posted by Kevin | June 1, 2009 at 7:29 am | ShortcutThanks for the kind words Aaron but you don’t have to call us spectacular; “stellar” will do just fine.
Posted by maverickcav | June 1, 2009 at 8:35 am | ShortcutNice article. I hope that the horrible job of the NCAA committee in seeding teams doesn’t get swept under the rug. UCI and UVa were both unfairly treated. But it sure is nice to come out on top.
Posted by Chris | June 1, 2009 at 8:39 am | ShortcutIf Western Kentucky won the Oxford Regional, I’d think the Cavs would be the favorite to host.
Posted by Luke Gude | June 1, 2009 at 8:51 am | ShortcutMaybe UVa fans will quit whining now and realize that, as usual, the teams that really got hosed are the ones out west. To send a team as good as Virginia to Irvine as a two seed was a serious injustice to both, and as it turns out Irvine is the team that got hosed. Kudos to the Cavs.
Posted by BL | June 1, 2009 at 10:14 am | ShortcutI think they definitely have a chance to host a super regional. Especially if western kentucky beats old miss. I’m no expert like the guys who sent them out to Irvine, but I think they’ve earned a super regional, regardless of who they play.
Posted by Kunal | June 1, 2009 at 11:02 am | ShortcutI hope they get the chance to host!! I stuck around for the summer to be able to watch them play and we got a raw deal with the regional. Hopefully we earned a spot to host now! GO HOOOOS!!
Posted by Brian | June 1, 2009 at 11:03 am | ShortcutThe Hoos are bound for Omaha!
If WKU wins today, I think we would definitely host. If Ole Miss wins, I would imagine Ole Miss probably hosts.
Posted by Scott | June 1, 2009 at 11:23 am | ShortcutOle Miss as the 1 seed will host if they beat WKU. UVa as the 2 seed will host if WKU beats Ole Miss.
Posted by FullertonBaseballFan | June 1, 2009 at 11:33 am | Shortcutnot sure if this is correct, but i think because of the difference in seeds between UVA and Ole Miss or West. Ky, that’ll determine who gets to host. Ole Miss wins, and they host. West. Ky wins, and UVA hosts. i hope i’m wrong – i hope UVA gets to host no matter what. being higher up in the RPI, it would make sense to me. GO HOOS!
Posted by Dave | June 1, 2009 at 12:07 pm | ShortcutBooya NCAA! In your &%@# face! West coast teams all are finesse pitching and no grit and no heart. The Hoos spanked that west coast ***!
Posted by BrianR | June 1, 2009 at 4:37 pm | ShortcutCongrats to the Cavs program. You were solid this weekend and showed no signs of weakness. Best wishes in the Super Regionals!
Posted by UCI Fan | June 1, 2009 at 5:13 pm | ShortcutBrianR, I’m a Hoo, and that was unnecessary. What hurt SDSU and UCI wasn’t heart, but lack of pitching depth and overall lack of firepower. Strasburg was erratic in the first 2 innings when we scored against him. But he settled down, and ended up not walking a batter and struck out 15. (That ball explodes out of his hand. I’d hate to be his catcher.) We blew it open against the SDSU bullpen. UCI got more hits in the Sat game, but we ended up with the scoring opportunities. And in yesterday’s game, we didn’t lock it up until knocking out their set-up man and closer. Needless to say, Morey, Hultzen, Carraway, Wilson, Packer, and Arico were phenomenal as were Wern, Valdes, and Parker. In the end, we were more athletic, had better depth, and better chances. That’s how we won the regional.
Posted by Fred | June 1, 2009 at 6:20 pm | ShortcutEven if Virginia makes the CWS, they wont win the national title. I mean seriously. The ACC hasn’t won the CWS in what, 54 years or something like that?
Posted by Tom | June 1, 2009 at 7:11 pm | ShortcutOle Miss will Host the Super Regional because they were No. 1 seeded in their regional. UVA was No. 2 so Ole Miss being higher seeded will host. UVA is in for a treat. Baton Rouge and Oxford had the two highest crowd numbers in all of the regionals this past weekend. Oxford in my opinion is one of the greatest college towns in the nation. I think this will turn out to be a great Super Regional. I admit I am a REBEL fan! But Bests of Luck to both teams. I am sure UVA is a great squad, as they beat Irvine, and are rightly deserving of the Irvine Regional Crown.
