Hey guys,

I like the experimentation but did this replace the weekly college chat? I LOVE the podcast for my drive into work but also like the chat format because it's more interactive than what you can do in a 2-man video (which seems redundant with podcast but I'd rather not have video for the drive).

Seems like video/audio 2-man option and interactive chat with readers would be ideal.

Keep up the great staff

Absolutely not. Aaron is still chatting every Monday, usually at 3:30 p.m. ET. Here’s this week’s link: http://www.baseballamerica.com/chat/?1361813737

My team does not live in a vacuum.  I realize that.  But, why can’t teams be ranked by their play on the field, instead of where people THINK they will end up?
TCU Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle is in excellent position to compare CSF to Ole Miss.  Do you believe that Coach Schlossnagle would agree with BA’s relative rankings for the Titans and Rebels?

Also, no disrespect to the Tennessee-Martins and UNOs of the world, but SEC teams should play some ranked teams outside of their own conference (talk about a vacuum!).   How about a ROAD game against a D1 opponent?

We have preseason rankings for a reason—they attract attention, they get people talking about college baseball. We put a lot of work and study into them, and then to abandon them two weeks in would be foolish. I think Coach Schlossnagle got swept by both teams, so he wouldn’t care how we ranked the teams; he’d just want his team to figure out how to win a game.

TCU Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle, on CSF: "…if their pitching holds up that’s a national championship team. No disrespect to anybody left on our schedule; that’s the best offensive team I’ve seen in college baseball in a long, long time".
Note:  TCU has played both CSF and Ole Miss, this year.

You sounded a bit defensive, John.  And you didnt really answere the question.

I guess I will have to be satisfied with the USAToday Coaches Poll:  Fullerton jumped 13 spots, based on PLAY ON THE FIELD.

Well using that logic, shouldn’t Fullerton be ranked No. 1 right now, or close to it? We’re just not going to blow up our rankings on a week-to-week basis — it’s a long season, and there are too many fluctuations. It is baseball, folks! Teams get hot and teams get cold, and over the course of the season, the cream rises to the top. Two weeks still a very small sample size, and we’re certainly not going to move teams down when they have taken care of business, even if other teams behind them have made more noise early. All that said, I am sold on Fullerton — they have answered the few questions I had about their team (on the mound) coming into the year, and I expect they will finish the season in the Top 10. That doesn’t mean they need to be there in Week Two. We have a methodology, and we have been very consistent with that methodology for three decades now. If you don’t like it, that’s fine — you are welcome to express your disagreement, and I hope I have at least helped you understand how we do things and why, whether you agree or not.

Not defensive at all, Gary. I’m quite confident in our approach and our rankings. We also respect what the other teams have done on the field, not just the Titans. Thanks for your interest and good luck to Fullerton, which obviously is off to a great start.

Great vlog, guys. My biased ears obviously loved what you guys were saying. It's been a while since Fullerton's been blazing out of the gates. But they always have one of the toughest SoS in the nation year in, year out – this year their intended nc SoS is #2 via Boyd.  But I have NO qualms about where they are ranked now, yet I've long felt that preseason rankings are over-weighted, and have too much artificial stamina… especially when it comes to teams playing weak SoS non-conference games early on. It far over-rewards weak scheduling… for three decades now!  ;-)  Taking care of business doesn't and shouldn't hold much weight against weak schedules like that vs team demonstrating it on the field of play against noteworthy comp, IMHO.  I just think more give and take should be awarded & demoted in the early parts of the season.  Make some very TOUGH decisions on who should be demoted early on even if they were taking care of businessagainst weak comp. Questions will ALWAYS arrise SOMEWHERE.  There should be more noteworthy leap frogging early-on inside the published Top 25 like was done with some of the teams that leap frogged over Texas, Miami and ASU, outside, to get into the recognized realm this weak.  In your talk on Fullerton, in this example case, it would be guttsy to back up your early rankings to say that you still stick to your guns and expect Oregon to come in and take two against Fullerton this weekend (which should be a special and fun series, given the coaching histories). Reconcile the week ahead expectations with the talk of the past week. That's walking the talk. ;-)
Which you're both more than capable of doing, btw.
Aaron made an interesting observation about a good example team: Fullerton. Aaron had a couple key question marks about the CSF squad. He believes they've already been resolved in positive fashion via demonstration. If those question marks had not been there… where would Fullerton have been ranked in preseason??? It's not meant to be the biased question that it is, it could be about ANY stellar playing out-of-the-gate team.  I'm willing to bet markedly higher? And teams playing weak schedules will have lingering questions and uncertainty till they meet up with good comp.  Uncertainty should equate to lower rankings… as Fullerton had.  But now are stuck with via the ranking, basically.
Great vlog, guys! And the new RPI rules seem to provide "lopsided" motivations. The road teams now have almost playoff style motivation and the home teams have practically LESS than just another game to play. It will be an interesting season. Keep up the GREAT work guys.  This is what makes the talks so very interesting.

If I didn’t respect your opinions, I wouldn’t read them.  If I didn’t think that you were listening, then I wouldn’t comment (so regularly).  So, thank you and good work!
I do however agree with what PhxTitan and others have said in the past.  The least accurate ranking of the year is the Pre-Season Poll.  So, it bothered me when John instinctively clung to those preseason rankings.  Wins and Losses are obviously very important -and most important, when it comes to standings.  But, HOW teams are PLAYING, along with W/L should drive the rankings.
Much of your value comes from the fact that you attend so many games in person and use the Eyeball Test.  Also, you speak to the coaches and players.  So, you have a great sense for how good teams really are as well as how they are playing.  All I ask is for THAT info to drive the rankings.  If you believe that there are 16 teams in the country that would win 2 of 3 from Fullerton at a neutral location, then you have ranked them correctly.   I think that in Week 1 and Week 2, they would have won any series in any stadium.  Also, I struggle with the fact that what BA and others have published about the Titans, indicates that they are better than 17th in the nation (right now).  Hell!  I enjoyed and agreed with your pod cast discussion.  I just don’t think that the rankings are consistent enough, with your own observations.
I believe that we fans would be very receptive to occasional large changes in the weekly rankings, when justified by play on the field.  Will Fullerton cool off?  -Probably as some point.  They sure face a tough enough schedule to slow any team down.  Will Florida be back?  Maybe. -If they win their way back against quality opponents.  But, you said it yourself:  Western teams don’t have to travel, yet they do.  Southeastern teams remain at HOME and pad their stats vs. Weak Sisters –and the rankings don’t reflect that as much as they should.  The best Teams don’t always have the best (or future Pro) talent.  That is why the games are played.  Do the SEC and ACC have good talent?  Yes.  Are the teams the best?  We won’t know that until they play strong opponents. -Opponents that are really playing well –not those that were good last year or have a high PRE-SEASON ranking.
Thanks again, guys!

Thanks for the thoughtful responses, guys. I do get where you’re coming from.

Like Aaron said, thanks for taking the time to respond. I would add as an aside, the best Fullerton team of my time at BA was 2004, a national title winner, and that team DID have the best future pro talent — eight future big leaguers by my count, from Red Turner to Vinnie Pestano to Kurt Klutch.
