UNC Greensboro announced it is not renewing the contract of coach Mike Gaski after 22 seasons. Gaski, who is heavily involved with USA Baseball as its president since 2001, was let go after a 25-27 season that included a 10-20 Southern Conference record.
He's the only coach in the history of the program and leaves with a 657-540-1 record, with regional appearances in 1994 and 1997.
The Spartans' job is attractive for a mid-major position because of the strength of the Southern Conference, which usually gets more than one regional bid, and the excellent UNCG Baseball Stadium, one of the best mid-major ballparks in the Southeast. It opened in 1999.
Three prominent names linked to the opening include Red Sox national crosschecker Mike Rikard, Elon coach Mike Kennedy and Auburn assistant coach Link Jarrett. Rikard played at UNCG, coached at Wake Forest as an assistant and was a head coach in the Cape Cod League, but has been in scouting since 2002. Kennedy coaches at his alma mater but wouldn't have to move to take the UNCG job, which would afford him a public school's advantages and a better ballpark. Jarrett played at Florida State and has a successful track record as an assistant.

Posted by chris | May 29, 2012 at 10:37 pm | ShortcutI meant to comment in the story that UNCG also should consider Keith Shumate, the former NCA&T coach and former coach at Greensboro’s Grimsley High. He’s a good man and a good baseball coach.

More likely candidate is Greg Starbuck from Elon, long-time assistant due for HC job. Also what about Lancaster from Mt. Olive or Gant from Catawba; two coaches from NC that have had tremendous success at the DII level.
Posted by Drtax | June 1, 2012 at 3:48 pm | ShortcutKennedy to Duke is much more likely; he flirted with Wake Forest a couple of years ago, Duke has a higher national profile as an athletic program if not in baseball.
Posted by John Manuel | June 1, 2012 at 4:06 pm | ShortcutWhat about Mike McGuire at Louisburg? Seems he got a bad deal not getting the head job at Winthrop and I know he did well in his first year in JUCO
Posted by ReggieBall | June 1, 2012 at 7:08 pm | ShortcutWhats the word on Mike Martin Jr becoming the UNCG coach once FSU is out of the CWS? Maybe to get alittle head coaching experience before taking over for his dad?
