Saturday Roundup: OSU’s Osich No-Hits UCLA

Lefthander Josh Osich threw Oregon State's first complete-game no-hitter since 1947 in the Beavers' 2-0 win at UCLA. Osich struck out 13 and allowed just one baserunner—a fourth-inning walk to Dean Espy. It was the fourth no-hitter in Oregon State history. "It's the greatest feeling," Osich told BA afterward. "I don't even know how to explain it."

Osich, who missed last season after having Tommy John surgery, improved to 6-1, 2.77 on the season, and he had spent most of the season pitching solely with a low-to-mid-90s fastball and a quality changeup, as he had not been cleared to throw breaking balls.

"Just about everything was working (Saturday)," Osich said. "I was throwing three pitches, I was throwing my curveball for the first time this year, and it helped out a lot. When I faced the lefties, when I got ahead in counts, instead of throwing fastballs away, I'd throw them curveballs, trying to get them to chase."

Osich out-dueled Trevor Bauer, who struck out 15 and yielded just four hits and two walks in a complete game. The Beavers remained in first place and clinched the road series. We'll have plenty more on Osich and the red-hot Beavers in Monday's Three Strikes.

The Rainbows clinched at least a split in the four-game road series, and ensured they will remain in first place at  the end of the weekend.

• (15) Southern Mississippi at East Carolina: Marc Bourgeois's grand slam keyed USM's five-run fifth inning, and Jonathan Thompson threw a five-hit, complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win at ECU, clinching the series. Andrew Thurman (6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) earned the win in relief of Crosby Slaught (0.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER).
