Field Factoids

Courtesy of the NCAA:

• Mercer is the only first-time entrant into the NCAA tournament. Thirty-five of the 64 teams were in the 2009 field, and one of the newer teams is New Mexico, which is in the field for the first time since 1962. Oregon is in the field for the first time since 1964, and only two years after reinstating the baseball program.

• The eight teams from the Pacific-10 are the most ever for this conference, and tied for the best percentage of 80 percent (eight of 10 conference teams) in NCAA Division I baseball history. The Big 12 also sent eight of its 10 teams to regionals last year.

• Miami is in the field for the 38th consecutive year, extending its own record. Florida State is making its 33rd straight appearance, which ranks second all-time. Other long consecutive streaks include Cal State Fullerton (19), Rice (16), Oral Roberts (13) and Texas (12).

• The states of California, Florida and Texas put in six teams apiece into the field, followed by South Carolina. The Palmetto State has five clubs in with the Citadel, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston and South Carolina.

Here is a look at how the current NCAA Tournament field has fared in previous tournament appearances, beginning with the at-large invitees.
