OMAHA—After two weeks in town, I’m leaving Omaha tomorrow, so I had to squeeze in one more lunch at Lo Sole Mio this afternoon. Texas coach Augie Garrido had the same notion; he was enjoying the best Italian food in town when we walked in.
It’s been another memorable College World Series, and I’d like to thank the city of Omaha and the NCAA for the hospitality. It’s a privilege to spend two weeks every June covering the best sporting event in the world.
Let’s get to our picks for today’s winner-take-all showdown:
John: I didn’t see Taylor Jungmann’s complete game coming, that’s for sure. He did everything Texas could have asked, from pitching around errors to winning the game to saving the bullpen. He definitely gives Texas a fighting chance to win tonight because of it all. It also seems to be folly to bet against Texas’ offense at this point, it has proven itself to be consistently capable of getting big hits. Nonetheless, I’m taking Louisiana State with a rested Anthony Ranaudo and a rested Matty Ott, plus a team that has lost just five games all year that a righthanded pitcher started. That stat jumped out at me last night. LSU has to play better, and more focused, tonight than it was last night. I’m guessing it will.
John’s Pick: LSU.
Aaron: Once again, John has put it perfectly—I agree with everything he said, and I am also picking LSU tonight. Cole Green is really good, but I just believe Ranaudo is a little better. I still believe LSU is the slightly better team overall, and this year the best teams have won. That’s partly because the best teams are also the hottest teams, but these two teams have been equally hot over the last month or so. This has been an extremely compelling CWS Finals, and I get the feeling tonight could be a classic, whichever team is the last to die.
Aaron’s Pick: LSU.
