Ninth-Inning Surge Propels Texas

Texas has won yet another game in dramatic fashion. The Longhorns trailed upstart Army 10-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth before rallying to tie the score on Brandon Loy’s three-run double. Three batters later, Preston Clark ended it with a walk-off grand slam, giving Texas a 14-10 win.

The Longhorns will host Texas Christian in super regionals, as the Horned Frogs just completed their own walk-off victory. Jason Coats broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning against Oregon State with an RBI single to left, scoring Bryan Holaday.

Well Arkansas absolutely destroyed the Norman regional, way to talk about that a lot(or not even a mention all weekend) any chance that FSU comes to Fayetteville?

Brandon, I didn’t talk about it much because it wasn’t a very compelling regional—as you put it, Arkansas absolutely destroyed that regional. But check last night’s “Saturday Recap, Sunday Preview” post for my quick thoughts on the Hogs. I have to imagine there’s very little chance FSU gets sent to Fayetteville. If that happens, there’s something seriously wrong.

Like some of the Longhorn teams earlier this decade (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005), it seems that this team has nerves of steel. They were involved in a nip-and-tuck game against Army on Friday that they won 3-1. Then UT follows it up with an epic 25-inning 3-2 victory against Boston College on Saturday. Those two games featured Texas’ great piching. Today’s game featured Texas’ bats rather than their pitching, as Texas scored 8 runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 14-10 after a walk-off grand slam.

Everything seems to be coming together for this team at the right time. They won the Big 12 regular season title, followed it up with a conference tournament championship, and swept through their regional in dramatic fashion. I like the way Texas matches up versus TCU, especially considering that the super regional will be in Austin. Hook ‘em Horns!

Great take, Jim.
