USA Baseball Releases First 17 Invitees

USA Baseball released Tuesday a list of the first 17 invitees to the 2009 collegiate national team trials to be held in Cary, N.C. from June 15-24.

Five members of last year’s unbeaten national team have been invited back: Georgia Tech shortstop Derek Dietrich, Miami lefthander Chris Hernandez, Auburn first baseman Hunter Morris, Louisiana State catcher Micah Gibbs and Cal State Fullerton shortstop Christian Colon.

"We look forward to building off the momentum of 2008′s undefeated season, and with five players from last summer leading our first group of invitees, we’re well on our way," national team general manager Eric Campbell said in a release.

The first-time invitees include an impressive collection of power arms: Georgia Tech righty Deck McGuire, Mississippi lefty Drew Pomeranz and LSU righty Anthony Ranaudo from the sophomore class, and UCLA righty Gerrit Cole, Vanderbilt righty Sonny Gray, Baylor righty Logan Verrett and Louisville righty Tony Zych from the freshman class. All of those pitchers work in the 90s and have impressive secondary stuff.

Filling out the list are catchers Blake Forsythe (Tennessee) and Yasmani Grandal (Miami); infielders Rick Hague and Anthony Rendon (both from Rice); and outfielder Michael Choice (Texas-Arlington).
