NCAA Proposals Face Override Vote

Proposals to restrict text messaging by coaches to potential recruits and to dramatically change the way financial aid is distributed to Division I baseball players, both of which were approved by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors in April, will be reconsidered by the Board at its Aug. 9 meeting.

The NCAA received enough override requests (more than 30) from schools to force the Board to either reaffirm its April decision, acquiesce to the override requests or adopt alternative legislation.

The financial aid proposal, which would limit teams to 27 scholarship players and require every player who receives athletic aid to receive at least a 33 percent aid package, has generated considerable resistance among college coaches who claim the proposal punishes everyone for the low Academic Progress Rates of a few. But the Board is likely to reaffirm its decision, which would mean the matter could be settled by a vote of all Division I delegates at the January, 2008, convention in Nashville. The proposal would go into effect Aug. 1, 2008.
