Arkansas had some work to do in the SEC tournament after losing its final three regular-season series. The Razorbacks had seemingly lost their chance to earn a national seed and were in jeopardy of losing their home regional, as well. But the Hogs have taken care of business in Hoover, winning their first three games to advance to the championship round tomorrow against either Mississippi or Vanderbilt. Arkansas got a third straight strong starting pitching performance, this time from righthander Duke Welker (7 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K), in a 3-2 win against South Carolina this morning.
The Gamecocks entered the tournament with a tenuous grasp on a national seed, and chances are they lost their grip with a 2-2 performance in Hoover. Virginia and Coastal Carolina are probably competing with USC for the final national seed, and both have had better weeks so far than the ‘Cocks have. The unbeaten Chanticleers are playing one-loss Liberty for the Big South championship today (the score is tied 2-2 in the fifth inning), while Virginia is playing North Carolina for the right to advance to the ACC title game (no score in the first). Coastal has the highest RPI (seven) of the three teams, and a conference tournament title would be a nice complement to the Chants’ regular-season crown. But UVa. would trump both teams with an ACC championship, and just an appearance in the title game might be enough.
Of course, if San Diego loses the WCC title to Gonzaga, that could cause another national seed to be up for grabs. Stay tuned.
