I’ll have a new mailbag question up tomorrow, but for today I just wanted to post a few quick thoughts on Tuesday’s games:

• Florida State’s offense is legit. The Seminoles pounded Florida 14-6 Tuesday, posting six runs in the first two innings against lefthander Kevin Chapman, one of the better power arms in the freshman class. FSU has now scored in the double digits for eight straight games, and this outburst came on the road against a Florida team that just won a series against Miami. It looks like sophomore Ruairi O’Connor’s days as the starting center fielder could be numbered; freshman sensation D’Vontrey Richardson got the start there yesterday and continued to impress, going 3-for-5 with a double and his first career homer. By the way, Florida State coach Mike Martin picked up his 1,445th career win yesterday, moving him into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time list.
• Cal State Fullerton might have lost 8-7 against San Diego State, but the Titans should be encouraged by the pitching performances of Travis Kelly and Nolan Bruyninckx in relief, because those figure to be important late-inning options for CSF this year. Kelly did allow a run on one hit and two walks over two innings, but he struck out four, and Bruyninckx followed with a perfect inning of work, striking out one.
• UCLA can find a similar silver lining in its 14-1 loss to Long Beach State, as most of the damage came in an eight-run eighth inning against relievers Brendan Lafferty and Tim Murphy. But freshman Matthew Drummond looked strong, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks over four scoreless innings. Drummond was slow to start throwing this year because of arm tenderness, but he looks strong now and could be a solution on Saturdays until Charles Brewer returns from mono.
• Virginia’s offense is clicking right now, like Florida State’s. The Cavaliers scored 17 runs on 16 hits against William & Mary, led by five RBIs apiece for junior first baseman Sean Doolittle and sophomore second baseman David Adams. We know Virginia has an elite pitching staff; if the offense can continue to produce like this against stiffer competition, the Cavs must be considered a favorite to go to Omaha. I’m buying.
