There has been a flurry of teams renewing their player development contracts over the past two weeks as the minor league season draws to a close.
The most recent came when low Class A Charleston extended its relationship with the Yankees four years through the 2012 season. The two have been affiliated since 2005 and the Riverdogs have set club attendance records in each of the past two seasons and, at 272,010, still have a shot at topping last season’s mark of 284,718.
Low Class A South Bend and the Diamondbacks extended the third-longest relationship in the Midwest League through 2012. The two have been paired since 1997.
Short-season Eugene and the Padres re-upped for four years through the 2012 season. “It’s been a good relationship for all the years San Diego has been here,” Grady Fuson, San Diego’s vice president of scouting and player development, told the Register Guard (Eugene, Ore.). “I’ve certainly had a history here, I played in this league in the 1970s and managed in the 80s and 90s. I think it is even more exciting to have the chance for a new ballpark, I think that will bring a whole new environment to everything. But this is about our players, the environment where they kick off their career.
“For the most part, this is the first place they see in their path with the Padres and I think it is important that the first impression is a good one.”
Other recent signings:
• Double-A New Britain (Eastern) and the Twins two years through 2010.
• Low Class A Great Lakes (Midwest) and the Dodgers two years through 2010.
• Low Class A Kane County (Midwest) and the Athletics two years through 2010.
• Low Class A Lexington (South Atlantic) and the Astros four years through 2012.
• Double-A Arkansas (Texas) with the Angels two years through 2010.
• Low Class A Augusta (South Atlantic) and the Giants two years through 2010.
• Low Class Asheville (South Atlantic) and the Rockies four years through 2012.
So where does this leave us? The International League is essentially down to one team, Buffalo. All signs point to the Indians inking with Columbus in time for the Clippers’ new ballpark next year and the Mets heading to Syracuse in the Chuck Schumer-endorsed deal.
It’ll be interesting to see who ends up in New Orleans. The Nationals seem like a good fit in New Orleans once they get the boot in Columbus. One would think the Marlins might make a play for New Orleans as well in order to move their Triple-A affiliate a few thousand miles closer than Albuquerque. I’d still be surprised if Omaha and Memphis don’t stick with the Royals and Cardinals, respectively, and there isn’t a better geographic fit for the Dodgers than Las Vegas — despite playing at antiquated Cashman Field.
It seems like a lock the Yankees will re-up with Trenton, particularly considering Thunder president Joe Finley’s recent remarks, which would leave just Connecticut available. The Texas League is also down to one team in San Antonio—and there isn’t a natural geographic fit.
Who ends up in low Class A Wisconsin should be interesting. The Brewers deal in West Virginia expires this season and bringing in the hometown team would certainly be a boost at the gate for the Timber Rattlers. However West Virginia’s Appalachian Power Park is just four years old and arguably nicer than Wisconsin’s Fox Cities Stadium, circa 1995.
The first key date of the affiliation shuffle is Sept. 12-15, when the commissioner’s office and MILB have a four-day window to give notice to all clubs seeking reaffiliation. A list will be provided to all clubs within a classification of teams available for a PDC affiliation.
