Dodgers Dump Perez On Royals

Jim Callis -

The Dodgers already had banished ineffective Odalis Perez to relief, but he chafed at that role and accused the team of treating him like "trash" a week ago. Los Angeles gladly found a taker for Perez on Tuesday, sending him to the Royals for Elmer Dessens. To make the deal worth Kansas City's while, the Dodgers also included pitching prospects Blake Johnson and Julio Pimentel, plus roughly $8 million to offset the remainder of Perez' contract, which runs through 2007.

Chisox Acquire Former All-Star

Jim Callis -

The White Sox completed a trade for a former all-star on Monday, but it wasn't the deal for Alfonso Soriano so hotly rumored earlier in the afternoon. Instead, Chicago added Mike MacDougal from the Royals at the cost of minor league pitchers Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes.

Braves Don’t Give Up, Deal For Closer

Jim Callis -

Though they're 45-50, the Braves haven't given up trying to extend their streak of consecutive postseason appearances to 15. Five games behind the Reds in the race for the National League wild card, Atlanta moved to shore up its biggest weakness on Thursday. Trying to plug a leaky bullpen that has blown an NL-high 20 of 40 save changes, the Braves acquired Bob Wickman from the Indians for Class A catching prospect Max Ramirez.

Mets, Royals Swap Second Basemen

Jim Callis -

Barring a complete collapse, the Mets are assured of winning the National League East. But that didn't stop New York from doing some minor tinkering and acquiring another second-base option on Wednesday. In an exchange of Triple-A second basemen with big league experience, the Mets picked up Ruben Gotay from the Royals for Jeff Keppinger.

Contending Reds Make Baffling Trade

Jim Callis -

The Reds are just 1 1/2 games back in the National League wild-card chase and four behind in the NL Central, while the Nationals have the third-worst record in the league. Yet it was Cincinnati surrendering more talent than it received from Washington in a baffling trade on Thursday. The Reds gave up two productive starters, Felipe Lopez and Austin Kearns, plus Triple-A righthander Ryan Wagner to acquire a less-than-inspiring package of five players: big leaguers Gary Majewski, Bill Bray and Royce Clayton and minor leaguers Brendan Harris and Daryl Thompson.

Astros Ask Huff To Bolster Offense

Jim Callis -

Looking to bolster the 13th-ranked offense in the National League in hopes of making another of their patented second-half runs, the Astros added Aubrey Huff on Wednesday. In the first trade after the all-star break, the Devil Rays received a pair of Double-A prospects, righthander Mitch Talbot and shortstop Ben Zobrist. Tampa Bay also contributed slightly more than half of the remainder of Huff's $6.75 million salary for 2006.

Reds Hope Guardado Can Help Bullpen

Jim Callis -

For the second time in two days, a National League Central contender tried to shore up its pitching by adding a struggling veteran. After the Cardinals acquired Jeff Weaver for their rotation on Wednesday, the Reds countered Thursday by picking up Eddie Guardado from the Mariners for Double-A righthander Travis Chick. Seattle also included cash to defray part of Guardado's remaining salary.
