Catcher Matt Wieters, the fifth overall pick in the June draft out of Georgia Tech, was trying to get into playing shape after a long layoff following the draft. He reported to short-season Aberdeen after signing his contract, but he didn't appear in a game until the Orioles assigned him to the Honolulu Sharks in Hawaii Winter Baseball.

Brandon Tripp was selected as the Orioles' minor league player of the year after he batted .288/.377/.531 in 371 at-bats at low Class A Delmarva. Liz, 24, was the Orioles' clear-cut choice as their minor league pitcher of the year after going 11-4, 3.22 at Double-A Bowie and earning a surprise promotion to the majors, where he immediately joined an injury-depleted rotation.

Rommie Lewis, once one of the top pitching prospects in the Orioles organization, quit baseball for a year after dealing with personal issues and losing his passion for the game. He sat out the 2005 season, took a job at a pizza joint and wondered if he'd ever play again. He decided to return and was 3-2, 3.73 in 31 innings this season at Bowie.
