The Cubs traded for Phil Nevin in May, when they still hoped to contend and needed an injury replacement for Derrek Lee. Chicago's situation has changed drastically since then, so it sent Nevin to the Twins for a player to be named on Thursday, the last day players could be dealt and remain eligible for the postseason. The Cubs also contributed cash toward Nevin's 2006 salary.

Padres Pay Dearly For Month Of Wells

The National League playoff races are extremely tight, with only the Mets assured of a postseason berth and 10 clubs within five games of one of the other three spots. With several teams looking for starting pitching help and little available, the Padres parted with a quality catching prospect on Thursday to obtain David Wells from the Red Sox. The deal officially was consumated for a player to be named, but baseball sources have confirmed that Boston will receive George Kottaras.

Phillies Make Another Deal For Today

As the Phillies continue to make up ground in the National League wild-card race, they continue to make deals to help their cause. A week after trading for Jamie Moyer—and a month after seemingly giving up on their season by giving up Bobby Abreu, Cory Lidle and Rheal Cormier—Philadelphia acquired Jeff Conine from the Orioles on Sunday for Triple-A shortstop Angel Chavez. Baltimore also included cash to offset the remainder of Conine's contract.
