Not so long ago, Javier Herrera seemed on the speed cycle bound for the big leagues. A multi-tooled outfielder blessed with ability and enthusiasm, he seemed to possess the package that could make him a big leaguer quickly. Then, suddenly, everything went wrong. First there was that positive steroid test back in 2005 that led to suspension. The following spring, he went down with arm troubles that led to Tommy John surgery and caused him to miss the entire season.

There will always be a touch of baseball history about Mark Kiger. The 26-year-old became the first player in major league history to debut in the postseason when he took over at second base during two games in the American League Championship Series. Kiger played defensively for two half-innings after the Athletics pinch-hit for second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez in Games Three and Four.
